Nashville Flood
So I have officially survived my first, and hopefully my last, natural disaster. On Saturday, May 1 2010 my home town of Nashville Tennessee was pounded by record rain that turned into record flooding. I live in a community on the Harpeth river about fifteen minutes west of downtown. By 10am Sunday morning the river had started to creep into could not believe the water was so high. Little did we know, as you can see in this video, the worst was yet to come. It came up so fast that some didn't even have time to get out of their homes. I never thought I'd be part of launching a ski boat in the street to rescue people. It really was a life altering experience. Thank God, everyone made it to safety. Monday morning, when the water came down, it all started to sink in what had happened. We were completely cut off from the outside world without power or phones. We had no idea until three days later how bad the rest of the state had been hit as well. Me, my brother Scott, our niece Mickenzie, and friends Lawrence and Brad spent the next five days helping out with the recovery/cleanup process. It was absolutly heartbreaking. Families left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Most of them were not even in a flood plain so they had no flood insurance. They are left to start from scratch. You can't imagine the damage water can do until you see it first hand. All of the drywall, carpet, wood floors, tile, base boards had to be ripped out immediately. Basicaly, anything the water touched was destroyed. I know it will take months to get back to normal life for those affected and we plan on helping out everyday we can until it does. If you live in Nashville and were not hit, I strongly urge you to do the same. By the grace of God and about one hundred feet, my house was left untouched. But, I have a whole new level of respect for mother nature.
